The Peer Support Specialist enhances the full array of treatment services from initial referral to the client’s discharge through professional treatment by assisting the client in developing skills and enhancing strengths to avoid relapse and successfully navigate the full continuum of care and the road to long-term recovery. Roles and Responsibilities include acting as a mentor to individuals to promote decision making, empowerment and engagement; acting as a liaison between individuals, clinical team and community resources; taking role of advocate; engaging individuals referred to treatment at the initial point of contact to expedite screening for appropriate care; providing peer support to clinically complex clients; providing peer support knowledge related to treatment including methadone, buprenorphine or extended release naltrexone injection maintenance treatment; assisting individuals in seeking and receiving services to meet social needs and facilitate recovery; assisting in acquiring housing, necessities and skills for independent living; assisting clients in establishing relationships with primary care providers; serving as consultants and subject matter experts in MAT and community support groups; linking clients with employers; assisting with life and social skills development; acting as a role model by sharing coping techniques; promoting positive health and wellness; communicating client status regularly; documenting client interactions and services; attending trainings and clinical supervision sessions. Education/Experience/Skill Requirements include High School diploma or equivalent, two or more years' experience in behavioral health, training on advocacy and recovery principles, understanding of addiction and treatment options, and knowledge of community resources. Licenses/Certifications required include Certification as a Peer Specialist, CPR and de-escalation and restraint certification, with first aid possibly required.
